Motiv vs Stape. Server-side hosting vs conversion intelligence.
Stape is the most widely used server-side GTM hosting platform in the world, and for moving data it is hard to beat. But a perfectly configured pipeline still can't tell you which conversions you're allowed to act on, what each channel actually earned, or where your budget is leaking. More templates, same blind spot. Motiv is built for the part Stape leaves to you: understanding what your data is worth.
What Stape does well
Stape is the market leader in server-side GTM hosting, and for technical teams, agencies, and marketers who want maximum control over their data pipeline, it offers more depth and flexibility than any comparable tool.
Plans start at $17/month with a free forever tier available.
Server-side GTM hosting at scale
Your website sends raw events to a GTM server container hosted on Stape's infrastructure, with both EU and global hosting options, then distributes that data to Google Ads, Meta CAPI, TikTok, and GA4 via server-side GTM tags.
80+ pre-built templates
An ecosystem of more than 80 pre-built templates covers most common platform integrations out of the box, so a technical marketer or agency can build a custom pipeline without starting from scratch.
Power-ups and dedicated gateways
Power-ups extend the base setup, Cookie Keeper extends first-party cookie lifetime and bot filtering removes low-quality traffic, while dedicated gateways for Meta CAPI, TikTok, and Snapchat offer simpler single-platform alternatives to full sGTM.
One moves your data. The other tells you what it's worth.
Stape solves the delivery problem
Stape is built around a single goal: making sure your data arrives. More completely, more reliably, and with more control than a standard client-side setup. The template library, power-ups, and dedicated gateways all serve that goal. The more you configure, the better your data flows.
Motiv solves the intelligence problem
Motiv is built around a different goal: making sure you understand what your data means. Which conversions you are legally permitted to act on. What each channel actually earned. Where your ad spend is being wasted and where it is working. That is not a pipeline problem. It is an intelligence problem.

GTM container capture
Representative estimate. Actual coverage depends on your GTM configuration.
The capture problem that templates cannot solve
Every event that reaches your GTM server container starts its journey in the browser. If a visitor uses an ad blocker, if iOS prevents the client-side script from executing, or if a checkout completes on a session where cookies were restricted, the server container never receives the event. Server-side GTM improves what happens to data after it is captured. It does not solve the problem of data that was never captured in the first place.
Studies consistently show that ad blockers affect 30 to 40% of desktop traffic in European markets. Every one of those visits is invisible to a GTM-based setup, regardless of whether the container runs client-side or server-side.
Motiv captures conversions from the source system. A Shopify order is captured from Shopify's server when the order is created. A lead or deal closure is synced from your CRM directly. These events never pass through the visitor's browser, so ad blockers, iOS restrictions, and cookie settings have no effect on whether they are captured. The result is 100% conversion capture.
Data residency is the easy part. Enforcement is the hard part.
Stape offers both global and EU-specific hosting. If GDPR data residency matters, that distinction is important: EU hosting must be actively selected, it is not the default. Beyond residency, Stape's compliance approach is GTM-based. Consent logic lives in triggers and variables, written by whoever configured the container, and the compliance responsibility still sits with the person who built it.
Motiv enforces consent at the pipeline level. Every inbound event is classified as Observed (prior consent confirmed) or Restricted (consent absent or withdrawn) before any dispatch decision is made. This is not a GTM trigger. It is how the architecture works, regardless of how the container is configured.
That means compliance does not depend on correct GTM setup or EU hosting selection, you can demonstrate per conversion whether prior consent existed at dispatch, and the Attribution Gap shows exactly what GDPR consent loss is costing in revenue, in euros, on your dashboard.
One source of truth vs scattered dashboards
With Stape, your conversion data flows to its destinations efficiently and reliably. What it does not do is bring that data together in one place, calculate what each channel actually earned, or tell you what you are missing because of consent restrictions.
With Motiv, every conversion passes through a single attribution engine before dispatch. Real revenue, whether from a webshop order or a closed deal in your CRM, flows back to all your connected ad platforms from one source of truth. The ROAS you see in Motiv is calculated the same way every time, across every channel, grounded in actual revenue and not platform estimates.
Choosing between them
Use Stape if…
- You have a technical team or GTM-proficient agency managing your server-side setup
- You need maximum flexibility and control over your data pipeline
- You want a broad template ecosystem to cover complex or non-standard integrations
- You are comfortable owning and maintaining the compliance layer yourself
- Global hosting coverage matters for your infrastructure
Use Motiv if…
- You want to know what your ad spend is actually earning per channel, without building an attribution layer on top of your infrastructure
- You're tired of each platform reporting its own ROAS with no way to reconcile the numbers
- You need GDPR compliance that doesn't depend on whether your consent logic was configured correctly in a container
- You need a number that shows leadership what consent-related data loss is costing commercially
What Motiv is not
Motiv is not a GTM hosting platform or a general-purpose server-side infrastructure tool. If you need the depth, flexibility, and ecosystem that Stape offers, it is the right choice. Motiv is purpose-built for conversion intelligence; it does one thing thoroughly, and once it's running, it runs without you.
Three things Stape can't give you
Conversion intelligence, not just infrastructure.
Every conversion captured
From every source system, not from what a browser managed to report.
True ROAS per channel
Calculated by an independent engine with no commercial interest in the outcome.
GDPR-compliant by architecture
Consent enforced at the pipeline level, not through configuration that someone could accidentally misconfigure.
